Julie B. Beck, Relief Society general president, explains that “providing for ourselves and others is evidence that we are disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ. …" Not only should we be willing to help those we are called to serve, but able. If we are not able to help ourselves, then we cannot serve others as freely. This month the message encouraged us to prepare ourselves and do as much as we can to be self-reliant. Starting big or small, as long as we start. Provident Living classes, canning food with each other, sharing tips with one another, any little thing helps. Remember, the Lord valued the widow’s mites more than the gold of the wealthy, for she gave all that she could. We are not expected to give more than we are capable, but sincerely with a willing heart to uplift the burdens of others. Pray to know the needs of those you visit teach and how you can help or just uplift, which is more often what is needed.
