Provident Living: Hurricane Preparedness - Stay or Go

We had a wonderful Provident Living class last night. There was lots of information given out on Hurricane Preparedness. If you weren't able to attend, or didn't receive the handout, you can download it HERE.

In the case of a hurricane, the ward has an evacuation route worked out that avoids the main roads, which tend to get really backed up during evacuations. You should print this route out NOW and put it in your 72 hour kit. You can download the map HERE and the turn by turn directions HERE. This evacuation plan will take you from the church on Drexel Dr. to the church that we are assigned to evacuate to in San Antonio.

Recipes Shared at the Relief Society 10 Cow Women Meeting

Homemade Yogurt:
www.everydayfoodstorage.net: search for "Food Storage Yogurt." You will find tons of information.
www.faithfulprovisions.com: on the right hand column, under "Popular Recipes", "Homemade Yogurt" is the first recipe listed there. This has pictures and step by step instructions.

Here is another yogurt recipe, shared by Sister Tracy Westbye:

1 quart milk (any kind-I do skim or sometimes 2%)
Heat to 200 degrees (or when the entire thing is steaming but not boiling)
Cool to 115 degrees (or when you stick your pinky in it and leave for 10 seconds)
Add honey, vanilla,…( I add a few tablespoons of honey and a few dashes of vanilla).
Add some milk  to ¼ cup active plain yogurt and mix and put back into milk and mix
Put into glass jars and lids and put into slightly warm oven (turn on for a minute on 120 degrees then turn off before you put them in)
Leave for 4-5 hours. Put into fridge.

It says it lasts for up to 2 weeks but I know its good much longer. I think that if you want to use some to make the next batch then it might only stay “active” for about 2 weeks. That’s my guess. Once you make it then you can just use some of that to make the next batch and so on, so it gets cheaper and easier. Yeah!  I love it with some of my jam in it. Its really good on French toast or with granola….or both.

Magic Shell Fudge Sauce:
www.katy2ndwardpreparedness.blogspot.com: on the right hand column, click on recipes. Scroll down to "Powdered Milk Recipes" from Jan. 16, 2011. The fudge sauce recipe is almost the last one on the list. There are also a couple of yogurt recipes here, and a hot cocoa recipe, and other good recipes.

Cinnamon Roll Recipe

Last December, Suzanne Orton taught a wonderful Provident Living class on baking, and she shared her recipe for cinnamon rolls. Since the holidays are coming, and the weather is turning cooler, I thought it would be fun to pull out this recipe again. Enjoy!

Suzanne's Cinnamon Rolls

2 c. scalded milk
1/2 c. shortening
1 c. mashed potatoes
5 tsp. or 2 pkgs. yeast
1/2 cup warm water
2 eggs, slightly beaten
1 c. sugar
1 tsp. salt
1/2 cup nuts (opt.)
1 cup raisins (opt.)
7-8 cups flour

Pour milk over shortening and let cool to lukewarm. Soften yeast in 1/2 cup warm water. Add to milk mixture w/ eggs, sugar, salt, mashed potatoes and 4 cups flour. Beat with mixer until smooth and well blended. Add remaining flour slowly to make a soft dough. Cover and allow to rise until double. Divide dough in half and roll into rectangle 1/2 inch thick. Spread w/ butter. Sprinkle brown sugar and cinnamon. Roll up and cut into 1 inch slices. Place on cookie sheets and let rise until double. Bake at 350 for about 20 min. Put icing on while hot and still in pans. Makes about 3 dozen.

Icing
4 oz. cream cheese
1/2 cup softened butter
1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
1/2 tsp. vanilla
pinch of salt

San Francisco Herb Order

Sisters,

Here is some information about an opportunity to order bulk spices. Please contact Lucy Stern with any questions.

Phone: 281-444-8504
email: lucy.stern@gmail.com

For those that are interested:

Our group will be doing the San Francisco Herb order due by Nov. 8th....  We have done this order every year for the last 20 years or so... The herbs and spices are great and we get good prices...  In the past we have handed out catalogs for people to see but the company is trying to cut costs and we will be using the online catalog to review the products...  Please do not order online, just see what they have and send the order in to me.....  Here is the webpage:  www.sfherb.com   Go to the "Catalog" icon and down load the catalog for easier viewing....

Here are the questions I get every year:

1)  Do we add shipping costs to the order?   Answer:  NO   When we get $ 500.00 or more ordered, we get a 15% discount on the order... This is just enough discount to cover the shipping costs... So No shipping needs to be added to the order.

2)  There are two prices listed ( some items there are three)  If you order 1 - 4 pounds of a product, you use that price per pound... If you order 5 pounds or more of that item, you use that price per pound...   Note:  There are a few items that can be ordered in 4 oz. and 8 oz. sizes...  If you are ordering any of these items, please write down the size of the item...

3)  The order should come in right before Thanksgiving... Sonja and I get together Thanksgiving weekend and divide up the order and get it ready for pickup...   Please write down your ward and stake on your order form so that I can put them together for disbursement...

4)  Email or mail me your order by Nov. 8th... Send a check or money order payable to: Lucy Stern ( If you live close enough, you can bring me cash) Email to:  lucy.stern@gmail.com   or mail to:  Lucy Stern   15707 Autumnbrook Dr.  Houston, Texas 77068  Please include your name, address, phone, email, ward and stake.... Please remember to put an item # and product description as well as how many of an item that you want...  Remember there is NO tax and NO shipping..... If you are mailing me your order, please let me know so I can keep and eye out for the order and check...

Thanks,   Lucy Stern

Walton Feed Order - DEADLINE OCT 27

Sister Straw is putting together an order from Walton Feed that we have been invited to participate. Please read through the information she provides. You can download a copy of the orderform HERE. You will need to go File > Download or File > Make A Copy to complete the order form. Email westlakewardreliefsociety@gmail.com if you have any problems with the orderform.

----------

There are a wide variety of products available, with some really great bulk prices on organic products.  Their website, http://www.waltonfeed.com/, has lots of information about the products and about being prepared for emergencies.  You can also compare features of some products (like wheat grinders) on their website.  There is also complete nutritional label information.  Look there all you want (shopping on the website may make more sense than trying to shop on the spreadsheet) , but don’t order from the website if you want to take advantage of our discount prices.

The exact delivery date won't be known until after the order is placed, but it will be before the end of the year, hopefully before Thanksgiving.

Shipping will be an additional $0.17 per pound.  If you are using the excel spreadsheet, it will calculate shipping and everything for you at the bottom of the sheet.

For this order, all payments must be made by credit card (or ATM/bank card). Please include your card number, expiration date, CID number (the last 3 or 4 digits to the right on the back of your card) and the cardholder’s name.  That information can either be in an email, a fax, or on the provided order sheet.  Cards will be charged by Walton Feed 2-3 days before the order ships.  If you need to pay with check/cash, please find a friend and place an order together using your friend’s credit/bank card.

Please send with your order the name, phone number and email address of an alternate contact that would be willing to pick up your order the day of delivery. Someone must be there to pick up your order. I will make every effort to contact you or your alternate as far in advance of the delivery as possible, but keep in mind that the truck can deliver any day (though usually on a Saturday) and any time of day (including evenings). I’m hoping for a Saturday morning delivery, and that’s what I’ll request. There is no definite pick up location as yet, but it will be on the north side of Houston. If there are unclaimed items at the end of the pick up period on the day of delivery the items will be donated to a needy family. When you order, you are agreeing to this policy. I simply do not have the space in my home to store any items. Please let me know within two weeks if there are any problems with your order. It would be wise to look everything over very carefully at the pickup and then again as you get home. I need to get any potential reimbursements handled as soon as possible after the delivery.

If you have questions, please contact me. I’ll be glad to answer questions, and can find out the answers to whatever I don’t know. I’ve listed my cell phone number below for the last minute, day of delivery emergencies – otherwise, email is my first choice, followed by home, then cell phone (since I likely won’t have your order in front of me if I’m on my cell). Please send this email on to anyone that you think would be interested. The more the merrier! This will be the last order I will be doing any time soon. I know I promised to do it last year, but life has been too crazy. I do know that there is someone else in town doing occasional orders and will send her name and contact info out to the list in the future so you will have a contact for future orders.

Emergency Water Storage

This is a "last minute" water storage helper, for those who want to use their bathtubs as a container for water if you are preparing for a direct hit of a hurricane. They are to be used only once and are recyclable. Here is their website: http://www.waterbob.com/Welcome.do

These are the plastic "bladders" which can be filled in a bathtub to keep the water potable for up to 3-4 weeks, if necessary. If you just fill a bathtub without this plastic container, the water is only good for washing and flushing the toilet.

Lucy Stern in the Houston North Stake is placing an order. Contact her TODAY (Monday, July 26) if you are interested in adding to her order. Lucy: 281-444-8504.
